Kimberly’s expertise and know-how spans large weddings and lavish balls, but what we love most are the special tables Kimberly sets at home. Kimberly certainly believes that an evening with family is something to celebrate, and we are thrilled to be one of her go-to sources. See the beachside tablescape that Kimberly created for her extended family, and read below for some of her tabletop tips and tricks.
Fete Home: What's Your Inspiration for Today's Table?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: Our annual summer vacation with my family has always been at our lakeside cottage in Canada and is filled with evening meals on the deck over looking the water and the sunset. My mother has been collecting blue and white tabletop goodies for those occasions since the 80s so it is so much fun to dig in and tablescape there! This summer was different as recreational travel across the border was closed down so we all gathered instead at a rental in California on the Pacific Ocean. I was craving a long blue and white table that would seat all 16 of us and would share the same comfortable color scheme and look that we find comfort in every year at our regular gathering spot.
Fete Home: What’s your favorite item in this Fete Home collection?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: That is a hard question because I love it all! The octagonal placemats are really special and I think they will get used a lot but I also just adore the plates and glasses!
Fete Home: What are your tips for creating a stylish table setting?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: Use layers and have fun! One of my favorite things about tablescaping as a creative outlet is that it is really easy to fix something that doesn’t ‘work. That makes it easy to experiment!
Fete Home: What’s the first thing you consider when hosting a party?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: The guest of honor or the occasion. I like to think of little things that honor them such as a favorite food, tradition or detail to add in to the mix.
Fete Home: Why do you love to entertain?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: I love having my friends and family around.
Fete Home: What’s something we’d always find at one of your parties?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: A happy hostess!
Fete Home: What’s always in your fridge? Are you always party-ready?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: We are almost always ready to pull together a cheese tray and some wine.
Fete Home: What do you love about what you do for a living?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: All of the little reminders to celebrate life.
Fete Home: What are you most inspired by?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: This changes every day!
Fete Home: What’s your go-to hostess gift?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: I like to take a candle or a book. I try to think of something that I might like to receive!
Fete Home: What’s your go-to song at Karaoke?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: I love them all! I usually sing whatever my sister Kari “Kari-Oke” Kloewer tells me to.
Fete Home: If you can have an unlimited supply of one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: A year ago I would have said flowers but now I’m thinking hand-sanitizer.
Fete Home: What personality trait has gotten you in the most trouble?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: What I would call determination is sometimes seen as being stubborn. ;)
Fete Home: What's the greatest invention of all time?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: A Tide-pen! Not really of all time but as a hostess and a mother, I have one at the ready all the time. It has saved countless items of clothing and table linens.
Fete Home: What 3 movies would you bring with you to a desert island?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: The home videos that Maggie Zuckerman makes for us out of our footage from every year. There are more than three but she does such a great job of putting them together with music and they make me smile, laugh and cry at the same time!
Fete Home: If you could have any super power what would it be?
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: That I could fall asleep easier! Oh - and make my children fall asleep too! We all struggle with bed time with the exception of my husband who can sleep any time and any where.
Fete Home: Are you a good dancer? Please explain.
Kimberly Schlegel Whitman: Probably not but I certainly think so when I’m on the dance floor! Ha ha!
